The Tear

It broke my heart to see that tear

run silent down your cheek.

I struggled deep within myself

for just the right word to speak.

I wanted to say “I’m sorry,”

but hadn’t really done anything wrong.

So silent — near I stand

naught but a shoulder firm and strong.

Accept and tarry here, your ear to me incline

and hear my quiet song of love,

My tear to merge with thine.
